Walks Can Help Counter Risk of Depression

A new study lists some benefits of walking. It says that taking nature walks regularly with other people lowers stress levels and cuts down your risk of depression. The study was conducted on 2,000 people in England, mainly participants from the ‘Walking for Health program.’

The researchers said that people who had recently undergone some stress in their lives, like a death in the family, a divorce, job related issues or even a serious illness felt a significant boost with this outdoor group activity.

It has been known since time immemorial that a brisk walk stimulates our organs and improves our mood but no large scale research had been conducted till now about the exact benefits of this activity. This recent study concludes how a walk can actually improve your mental well being and emotional health.

Walking is perhaps the least expensive, involves the lowest risk and is accessible to practically everyone but is still the most powerful yet under-utilized stress buster. The benefits double if it can become a group activity, with nature as a backdrop.

Keeping in mind the physical inactivity and mental health issues in the developed world, experts and researchers are constantly looking for accessible and new ways to help people improve their quality of life in the long term. This recent study has brought to the fore how a daily walk with other people can boost daily positive emotions. Not just that, it can also contribute positively to serious conditions like depression.
